Unconditionally accept every student
On a neurological basis, the human brain has a limited capacity for working memory. When learning something new at their potential, students must dedicate all their cognitive energy to developing that new understanding.
When students don’t feel accepted, their working memory is hijacked by a nagging concern for their need to fit in.
This concern over time results in stagnancy: rather than growing as people, students confine themselves to skills and knowledge they already possess.
Waking students up to the extent to which they’re leaving their smarts on the table is a delicate process built on a foundation of unconditional acceptance that our tutors constantly convey to our students.
When students absorb this mentality and learn to accept themselves, we are able to ignite their intrinsic motivation and curiosity about the world.
